What is Photo Manipulation?

Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photographs in order to create an illusion or deception. It has also has been regularly used to deceive or persuade viewers, or for improved story-telling and self-expression. Photo manipulation is often much more explicit than subtle alterations to color balance or contrast and may involve overlaying a head onto a different body or changing a sign's text. Photo manipulation is as old as photography itself; as early as the American Civil War, photographs were published as engravings based on more than one negative. Before computers, photo manipulation was achieved by retouching with ink, paint, double-exposure, piecing photos or negatives together in the darkroom, or scratching Polaroids.

Black & White w/Features in Color

Black and white are always a great combination. The absence of color leaves the eyes look more in depth to the detailed features such as lighting and textures. But revealing just a taste of color really brings out the feeling or mood of the moment captured.

Changing Backgrounds

This is always a fun way to enhance a photo. Feelings and emotions can shine and it rarely takes away from the main subject- and it happens to be one of my favorite ways to manipulate a photo. :)

Memoriam Photos

Merging photos is the only way some of us can get a picture with someone whom we have lost. In the above photo, a picture from my mother was merged with a photo of me taken 30 years later. These types of photos transend a moment of time that in real life would not be able to be produced.

Pet Photos



Let's face it, sometimes "sit", "come here", and "stay" don't always work when dealing with a pet- especially when photographing one as active as Wrigley. In the above picture, his eyes were recreated due to glare and the different adjustments to contrast and brightness created the focus on his face. Animals are full of personality and enhancing photos of them can relay that into the image.

Just Capturing the Moment

Not every photo ends up as we remember the feeling, through lighting and other techniques photos can be enhanced to bring the image to life. These styles vary per photo, and can compliment anyone or anything.

Fantasy Manipulations




What is your fantasy? This is almost impossible to describe, the photo really speaks for itself. This particular style is limitless to the imagination and can be customized to any preference. There is no end to the creativity or boundary of manipulating multiple photos.

Photo Color Enhancement


Sometimes just a touch of color can change the entire mood of a photo. The surreal can be achieved in many different ways; bland can become beautiful, and nature can bring a whole new life with this technique. As in many other fashions, this method can result in endless possibilities.
